Discription/Interpretation:
There appears to be a building that has been destroyed, the walls have fallen down and debris everywhere. Garbage seem to fill between the broken walls, almost as if it was purposely put into the space between the broken walls. The graffiti on the walls and the garbage in the streets giving the impression of poverty. There is a man stepping into the destroyed building. He is hunched over with his body sagging, one arm on the door frame, as he is stepping into the destruction.
Use in Teaching:
This can image can be use in a lesson about cultural judgment. The meaning behind this photo is nothing what it may appear to be. Because of what we see, we might think it’s about poverty. But it’s actually about the treasures that we might find when we excavate our homes and city’s in the future. Questions for students:
What would you leave behind for someone in the future to find when they excavate your house? How could you creatively leave clues on what kind of person you could have been? What kind of media would you choose to use to construct (sculpture, painting, collage), to represent who you are.
