In this lesson: Students will express with elements and design to customize shoes for their CFCs. (Using
line shape, form, space, and color to emphasize the metaphor for their selected CFC.
• STATE GOAL #26: Through creating and performing, understand
how works of art are produced.
IL 26.8.3d Visual Arts: Demonstrate knowledge and skills to create 2nd
and 3rd dimensional works and time arts that are realistic, abstract, functional and decorative.
In this lesson: Students will demonstrate understanding of elements and principles of design, problem
solving how to express an emotion and
awareness using mixed media on a 3D surface.

In this lesson: Students will translate how art creates powerful and impactful impressions on subject based
(CFC), and a understanding of practices of artist
who have given back to other (CFC) in the past.
Objectives:
Conceptual/Cognitive
Objective I: Given a discussion on CFC and customizing shoes using line, shape, form, space, and color, students can effectively convey their own compassion and care to CFC.
Objective II: Given a video/PowerPoint on selected CFC’s, students will successfully explore options of concept designs with rough drafts by elements of design.
Objective III: Given examples of work by artist Keith Haring, graffiti artist Lovepusher, Michael T. Figueroa, students will effectively communicate the relationship with CFC and customize shoes.
Artistic Skill Objectives:
Objective IV: Given paper and pencil/color pencils, students will skillfully design a composition using elements and principles of design that reflects symbolism of hope and encouragement related to the selected CFC’s.
Objective V: Given a presentation of selected CFC’s, students will appropriately respond through visual expression how emotions and compassion can help design concept shoes for CFC’s.
Objective VI: Given acrylic paints, ModPodge, paint markers; students will effectively create customized shoes.

Assessment Criteria:
Objective I: Students successfully explore options of concept
designs with with a shoe template worksheet by using elements of design (line,shape, form, space, and color)
Objective II: Students clearly explain how customizing shoes convey a message that represents their CFC using line, shape, form, space, and color, can

Lesson Title: HeARTful Soles (custom shoe painting)
Grade Level: 8th Grade
Time available for this lesson: 6 days of 40-minute sessions
Central Focus (Big Idea): Students will learn that art can be used to share kindness, compassion, love, and bring hope and courage to children fighting pediatric cancers by painting a pair of blank canvas shoes for a Child Fighting Cancer (CFC).

Students will customize a blank pair of shoes to create expressive features and organizational principles.

Students will customize a pair of shoes using mixed media to create words, symbols, and colors to inspire Cancer Fighting Children (CFC).

Students will create custom shoes based on their research for actual selected children of Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago. (Location is able to change if needed).
